Role play: how to steer your friend back in the right direction... While still being cool?!!

Today we acted out an important situation that happens to middle schoolers (and adults!) almost daily.

They have a friend who is on their way to making a bad choice. Said friend wants to take the long way to class, for example, because they think it is cool to be late. EVEN COOLER FRIEND says....

1. "dude, you're lazy- let's just get to class this way." (while it first appears like an insult, it might get your friend walking in the right direction)
2. "um, you don't want to run into Ms. Morrin down that other hallway" (Making a joke is OK, and your friend will respond to humor)
3.  "come on, let's get there so we can hurry up and finish that project we started yesterday"
4. "you go ahead, I'm goin' the normal way- see you there." (friend will not want to walk alone AND be late- alone.)

I am so proud to have advisees who are able to think in a smart way.  We all agreed it's harder to take action in the moment and that sometimes saying NO to a friend is not easy.

Coming soon... December conference preparation and high school researching!! :-)

Eddie reads poem during autumnal equinox assembly!

Go Eddie! We are proud of you for reading the beautiful autumn poem during Friday's assembly. Well done!  We also talked about High School choices and the process for this fall and winter.

Ask your student about the ACTION STEPS form they have regarding what students, families and advisors should be doing each month to prepare for December (tech schools) and February (Magnet schools) applications!

puppet chess, service learning brainstorm and teddy grahams

See photos of Isaiah and Hunter below... they already joined a team at ESM (cross country) and had their first practice yesterday after school.  People who join things in life are cool!  They got to wear the Captain Awesome shirt for a photo.

Shannon and Hunter forced their animal puppets to play chess. Checkmate!

Letter to our future selves...

This morning we wrote letters to ourselves.

"Dear me,.... I am proud of you for... in 8th grade! Good job and I know you can't wait to go to high school... wasn't the dance fun? I can't believe I joined the track team- it was hard but fun!... "

We sealed them up to open in June right before our promotion ceremony.  We realized it's important to reach for the future and know that we have the choice to control our lives.

We played our new favorite talk show game called, "Why you actin' so cray cray?!" One person visits the talk show and we get to ask them all sorts of questions.. would you rather go without sports or without video games? Would you rather have $1,000 right now or $50 a week for a year? Interesting stuff.  We were especially intrigued with the 3 school supplies Alexa would bring with her to a deserted island. Ask her about it!

Thanks also to Hunter for the popcorn snack

First official advisory meeting!!

Good afternoon!
After a busy first week back, I am proud to say Wilson Advisory is up and running.
In an odd turn of events, we could not find a flag in the office to say the pledge to.

Alas! Eddie was wearing his American flag converse so we were saved.

Welcome!

Welcome! What are you doing here? What are we doing here? We are Ms. Wilson's advisor/advisee group at ESM: a wonderful part of our lives. We will be learning from one another and also getting to know ourselves.  In 8th grade, it is important to look inward at who we are, what makes us part of the whole here at school and how we will find our place in the world.  In between tender moments of greetings, announcements and activities, 8th graders will be putting together Student Success Plans, portfolios, and leading their biannual conferences.  This will also be a perfect place and time to find support while applying to high schools this winter.  Sounds busy! Sounds like just the thing we need to make it a great year.

Ms. Wilson
